I am writing to ask that you ensure the Trident Alternatives review considers the possibility of no nuclear replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system.
 
Given the Strategic Defence and Security Review was launched with a view to 'moving on from the Cold War', it was regrettable that it uncritically assumed an ongoing commitment to Trident replacement - as set out in the 2006 White Paper - and failed to consider the possibility of non-replacement and non-nuclear defence alternatives.
 
Given that position, the recent announcement of a review into Trident Alternatives initiated by the Liberal Democrats in government, is welcome, but it must not make the same mistakes of the SDSR and ignore the option of non-replacement.
 
Before last year's general election, you highlighted the options of a 'virtual deterrent' and the option of ending our nuclear capability, in a paper written with Sir Menzies Campbell. Then the statement of the 2010 Liberal Democrat conference called for 'an extension to the SDSR and the inclusion of all items of military units and planned procurement, including the Trident nuclear weapon system.' 
 
I believe that a full review including the option of non-replacement and nuclear disarmament, including the potential opportunity cost and benefit for other areas of spending, must take place before the construction decision in 2016. This review is the ideal opportunity to explore these avenues - please don't miss this opportunity.
